Γιατροί Χωρίς Σύνορα/ Médecins Sans Frontières
In 1970 a group of French doctors joined an international aid mission to help victims of Nigeria’s civil war. They were frustrated by government interference in humanitarian aid and felt they were being silenced when they wanted to tell the world about the atrocities they witnessed.
To speak out about the plight of victims, and seeking an independent, impartial way to provide care where they saw the greatest need, they joined a group of French journalists who were committed to the same principles and founded MSF in 1971.
The organisation started life as a group of medics travelling to remote corners of the world, providing medical aid to victims of wars and natural disasters.
Over time the organisation grew, employing more people in the countries where it worked.
Now MSF has offices in 19 countries, including Greece.The Greek section of MSF opened in 1990
In 1999, in recognition of its “pioneering humanitarian work on several continents”, MSF was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
Today, more than 27000 members -medics, nurses, psychologists, logisticians, administratives- participate in programs of medical, humanitarian healthcare in more than 65 countries all over the world.

URBAN SURVIVORS project was developed by MSF in collaboration with the NOOR photo agency and Darjeeling Productions. The project highlights the critical humanitarian and medical needs that exist in urban slums over the world. The exhibition features photographs from five slums, in Dhaka, Karachi, Johannesburg, Port-au-Prince and Nairobi - where MSF is actively running projects- and these are the works of the award-winning NOOR photographers Stanley Greene, Alixandra Fazzina, Francesco Zizola, Jon Lowenstein and Pep Bonet. Our aim is to take the visitor on a virtual journey in the slums residents’ daily lives so as to inform on their living conditions and the major humanitarian issues which are raised.
Urban Survivors project was first shown in Greece last March, as a parallel event of/ and in collaboration with the 14th Thessaloniki Documentary Festival.
